VDNKH (All-Union Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy )

VDNKh began life in 1939 as the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition, a monumental paean to the achievements of collectivization epitomized by the famous statue Worker and Collective Farm Girl by renowned Soviet sculptor Vera Mukhina. Nowadays it's a part agricultural fair, part trade expo, part shopping centre and part street market, with amusements as diverse as paint-balling and camel rides - as well as the ubiquitous slot-machine arcades - on offer in various parts of the grounds. The park itself is an intriguing example of 20th century landscaping and the buildings are preposterously magnificent.

Menshikov Palace

Menshikov Palace on the Vasilevsky island is the first monumental residential building of St. Petersburg. It was built for Prince Menshikov, a closest friend and ally of Emperor Peter the First. Being one of the most interesting historical and architectural monuments of Saint Petersburg, the Menshikov palace After the restoration completed in seventies the palace housed the art exposition from Hermitage dedicated to the Russian culture of the beginning of XVIII century. The palace is excellently preserved and makes an extremely valuable architectural monument as one of the first buildings of Peter the First's epoch.
